Joplin, Mon. (AP) —Federal investigators are investigating overturned railcars and railroad tracks in an attempt to determine why Amtrak trains derailed in the Montana countryside over the weekend.
The accident killed three people and hospitalized seven.
The westbound Empire Builder was moving from Chicago to Seattle on Saturday afternoon when he left the truck near the approximately 200 town of Joplin.
according to Associated PressWhen the train derailed, there were 141 passengers and 16 crew members.
The train had two locomotives and ten cars, eight of which were derailed.
The derailment occurred on the track that had just been inspected, near the switch on the track where one set of tracks turned into two.
According to AP, everything from the switch to the suspension system and the shape and condition of the truck will be investigated.
Federal authorities were expected to provide the latest information late Monday.
The identity of the victim has not been revealed.
