Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — The Salvation Army today hosted an annual free Thanksgiving meal.

Tom Nickel, who lives in Tucson, said:

Dozens of people stopped by to serve holiday meals.

“It’s very important because I don’t have any family left,” Nickel said.

Guests came from different life paths. Some are homeless, others just want to find a community.

“My family is all in Pennsylvania. I’m here alone. Thanksgiving has always had a special day,” said Sandra Lewis, a Tucson homeless woman. I just thought it was a group of people here, and I can be sociable, get to know people, and maybe make some friendships.

One of the things they shared is thanks to the volunteers who organize this meal each year.

“I didn’t know it was such a big event, it was definitely well planned and they were thinking a lot about it,” said Aaron Fiore of Snowbird.

Salvation Army officers and about 100 volunteers helped prepare and cook traditional Thanksgiving meals.

“Without our involvement, things won’t improve,” said Timothy Grimes, a Salvation Army volunteer. Volunteering and helping those I can, that’s what we all have to do for each other. “

They served turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pies. In addition to dining, guests were able to enjoy entertainment from two music ensembles.

“This was very different and very uplifting, which meant a lot,” Fiore said.

The goal was to spread the holiday cheers and help people in our community in need of extra hands.

“This is Tucson, that’s all about Tucson,” Nickel said.
