As the old football saying goes, it has the ability and availability. Sammy Watkins is capable, but he lacks availability.
Watkins, the fourth overall choice of 2014, began his career enthusiastically before encountering the problem of persistent injuries hindering his career and the limits of his great potential.
Watkins won the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. He had many brilliant moments. But he knows he has a lot more to show and believes he can show it after signing a one-year contract with Ravens this offseason.
Watkins spent the last three years with the Chiefs, one season with the Rams, and the first three years with Bills. He hasn’t played 16 seasons since his rookie year and has missed 26 regular seasons in the last 6 seasons.
“I’m definitely [feel] “I think I’m in a different place here, in a great environment that helps me stay healthy, mentally stable and go out every day for performances,” Watkins said.
A hip injury hindered Watkins early in his NFL career, and a fracture of his left leg in 2016 was his biggest hurdle, forcing him to miss the first eight games of the season. A right leg injury set him aside in six games in 2018. Last year, a hamstring injury set him aside for five consecutive games.
Some of the differences, according to Watkins, are that he’s just above this year and knows better practice and how to actually work to hone his skills, but doesn’t hurt his body. That is. He praised Ravens’ coaching for helping it. This is especially important in training camps.
“They can feel me. They take me out in a couple of plays and let them participate in a particular play. They know what I need,” Watkins said. “And also, I’m old enough to understand some sort of thing now,” Hey, I need this. I need it. I need to work on this. “And they just do well with it. I’m doing it. I just hope I can keep it up, take care of my body and stay healthy. “
From trainers to diets, Ravens has a top-notch strength and conditioning program and a dedicated detailed recovery program. Watkins acknowledged that Ravens training staff took care of the body with massage and other recovery methods.
“There is a 100% injury rate. Things happen. And I just give it to God. Sometimes things mean [to be]”Watkins said.
“But I’m doing my best to stay healthy and do whatever I can to stay healthy. Sometimes things happen, but this year I want to stay in that area and stay healthy. I’m doing my best to go out every day to help my team. I think that’s my goal. “

Watkins also has the advantage of working with his personal off-season coach Keith Williams while in Kansas City. Currently, Ravens pass game specialist Williams is helping Watkins and all his receivers run the route daily.
“When I’m tired, or when I mess up this route-” Yeah, focus, focus, “Watkins said. “So that’s the type of thing that any athlete thinks they need. Yes, we’re old and grown-up men, but you push you harder than you push yourself. Must be, and I think that’s why my season and my year will be fine. “
Although he is only 28 years old, Watkins is an elder politician in Ravens’ young wide receiver corps. Marquise Brown said he had already learned a lot from Watkins about having the right mind and mindset. Brown said Watkins was driving the group and they were doing the same for him.
So far, Watkins has shown a good combination of big play ability and toughness to make a contested catch and move the chain. Ravens has been looking for such a consistent external receiver for years, and Watkins was able to offer it.
“It was always hard to oppose him. We’re talking about it. Our lockers are nearby,” said Jimmy Smith of Cornerback. “That guy is fast. He will bring a lot of play to our team.”
Watkins hasn’t recorded a 1,000-yard season since the second year of the 2015 league. Since then, he has exceeded 600 yards, mainly due to injuries. In 10 games last season, Watkins recorded 37 catches with 421 yards and two touchdowns.
But Watkins was blinking whenever he felt good. In his participation in the Chiefs’ 2019 playoffs, he made 14 catches with 288 yards and a touchdown. He made one of the Super Bowl LIV’s most clutch-plays with a 38-yard catch in the second half of the fourth quarter to set up the Chiefs’ Go-Ahead Touchdown.
“He was the fourth in the draft. He’s a talented man,” said John Harbaugh. “He loves balls. He has a lot of insights into those people. Another is his competitiveness. [His] Play-to-play competitiveness and his size. He is a physical man.
“I think he’s excited about the program here from a work ethic perspective. He’ll give him the opportunity to take a step that he hasn’t done in the last few years because of what he’s doing physically. I think you’re seeing a few things. Get his body right. We’ll see how he behaves. “
