Samantha Moreno Rodriguez was detained in Denver by the Denver Rocky Mountain Safe Street Task Force, led by the FBI. She will be imprisoned in a Denver area prison for one murder while pending transfer to Las Vegas.
Authorities issued a national arrest warrant on Monday against Rodriguez, a resident of San Jose. At a press conference, authorities identified the 35-year-old mother as a suspect in the murder of her 7-year-old son Liam Hasted.
Liam’s body was recovered on May 28. Rodriguez and Liam were last seen in San Jose on May 24, according to investigators. They were witnessed at Laguna Beach on the morning of May 26th and at Victorville that afternoon.
Liam’s body was found two days later, behind a rural bush in Las Vegas, at the trailhead, and just off the trunk road, officials said.
Many Bay Area residents were indignant at the news on Monday.
“Your child needs to be in another kind of place to do that,” said Louis Armendaris of San Jose.
A San Jose police investigator was informed by a family friend who saw reports of the Las Vegas case that both Rodriguez and her son had disappeared and believed that they might have something to do with it.
