Satkosia Tiger reserve is a tiger reserve located in the state of Odisha. It is spread over four districts namely Angul, Cuttack, Nayagarh and Bough. The name Satkosia is a combination of two words, Sat meaning seven and Kos meaning two miles. This indicates the length of the gorge i.e. 14 miles.
Presently it covers an area of 988 square kilometers. Its location is a natural beauty as it is located where the River Mahanadi passes through a gorge in the Eastern Ghats Mountains.
Earlier when the Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1976 and it had an area of 796 square kilometers. Then in the year 2007 the Satkosia Tiger Reserve came up and today it houses the Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary and Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary. The Satkosia Tiger Reserve houses a wide variety of flora and fauna.
About the Flora and Fauna of Satkosia Tiger Reserve
Satkosia Tiger Reserve is located in the Eastern Highlands. The type of vegetation that this place supports is mainly deciduous forests. Since, it is located along the River Mahanadi the reserve also supports riverine forests. The major plant communities comprise of deciduous forests including Sal. Satkosia has immense biodiversity. It is regarded as one of the best ecosystems in the country. This is understood from the fact that this place enjoys a wonderful demographical advantage.
The riverine forests here includes the forests of Hinjala, Dhauranja, Kochila, Arjuna and Phasi. When it comes to the floral diversity this reserve excels in housing varieties of Shorea robusta, Dillenia pentagyna, Terminakia alata to include a few. The varieties of bamboo in here are also a wonderful sight. Mainly two varieties of bamboo exist in here namely Bambusa arundinacease and Dedrocalamus strictus are common in this Tiger reserve.
The fauna supported by this tiger reserve is magnificently vast. It houses terrestrial animals, birds, aquatic animals and amphibians. The wonderful crossing of different habitats and life forms gives this place a diversified magnificence.
The major sightings here are of Elephants, Tigers, Wild Dogs, Sambar, Spotted deer, Barking deer, Jackal, Leopard, Giant Squirrel, Indian Hare and mangy more.
In addition to all this the reserve houses a wide variety of birds. There are around 332 species of birds in the reserve. Satkosia Tiger Reserve is also home to migratory birds. The migratory birds include Brahminy ducks, Bar-headed geese, Pintails etc. The varieties of resident birds include Owls, Pigeons, Minivets, Sun birds, Wood Pecker, River lapwing, Black-bellied tern, Golden oriole and many more.
The Satkosia Tiger reserve is also home to a wide variety of fishes and other aquatic fauna. I t also houses four species of endangered turtles.

Satkosia Tiger Reserve is open from 9 in the morning to 5 in the evening. It is open on all days of the week and even on holidays. It is close just during the period of wildlife census and estimation. This is notified in advance. The entry fee per individual is Rs.50 and visitors must have a proper identity proof.
