Portland, Oregon (KOIN) – A graduate of Portland State University, John Charles has established himself as a Viking quarterback. He is currently working on teaching and building the barbecue sauce business he launched during the pandemic.
Once I meet John Charles, I feel like I know him forever. He’s the kind of person you want to invite to a Thanksgiving dinner.
Charles has built a pretty good career by helping others as both coaches and mentors. Former All-Americans in Portland now have a desire for something entirely new.
Believe it or not, it’s already been thirty years since John Charles became “King of Portland State University.”
Charles is Vik’s Division II All-American quarterback, and despite playing for only two seasons at Park Blocks, Charles still threw an amazing 58 touchdowns.
“The opportunity for all of us is a testament to the whole program. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time,” Charles said.
For the past 13 years, Charles has taught high school students in Oregon and southwestern Washington proper quarterback techniques.
But now Charles is working on his second love.
Charles was not the one to step back from the challenge. And as a barbecue enthusiast, he thought it was time to give it a try.
“Last year, just before the COVID hit, I took out the recipe book and said,’I’m going to understand this,'” Charles said.
John-John’s barbecue sauce It is currently located in 9 stores in Prineville, where Charles lives. More or less it was his testing ground.
“I was handing out the sauce to the people in the town. They were like,” Where did you get this? ” Well, I’m working on something, “Charles said.
Word-of-mouth has increased demand. John Charles — Currently an entrepreneur.
“Someone said,’Stay small so you can keep it all,’ I hope, but it’s expanding,” Charles explained.
Charles is blessed with a few mentors helping him and uses a commercial kitchen to properly source his sauce.
“I can manage it now because I have a lot of local processes, but at that point I would like to come to Wendy’s and say” I want that source “or McDonald’s. Until then, they will have to fight me for it, “Charles said.
Charles is not a bettor.
“It’s John-John’s barbecue sauce-even meat is the sauce you’re looking for by name,” Charles said.
In 1993, Charles was named one of the five Jefferson Award winners for outstanding public services for young people in the Portland community. He still has a letter with a KOIN6 letterhead.
