Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — “We still work hard, we just work wisely,” said Scott McKee, head coach of the Sahuaro High School football team.
His team spent the afternoon practicing indoors to escape the record heat. He says he can still do most of what they would do in the field.
“The only difference is that we wear tennis shoes instead of cleats,” says McKee.
Sahuaro High School is part of the Tucson Unified School District. On Monday, the district said it was not allowed to practice outside during the afternoon hours. Tucson High School chose to go to the field late at night rather than staying in all the time during practice.
Other school districts have different plans. The Tank Verde School District has moved the practice inside. The amphitheater unified district takes a week off from practice. The Malana Unified School District follows standard health and heat safety protocols as it does during the school year.
