The DesignLED Products announcement has been supported by Scottish Enterprise since it was acquired by Faurecia and a Livingston-based supplier was founded in 2004.
The Design Center supports international automotive OEMs and their supply chains with solutions to complex optics, HMI and lighting integration challenges.
DesignLED is an LED lighting technology company with experience in designing, developing, prototyping and scaling thin and flexible LED lighting and HMI products for the automotive industry.
Suppliers focus on the emotional and functional use of lighting while addressing space, cost and integration challenges. DesignLED has a technology platform supported by over 68 patents worldwide.
“The outstanding designLED team has created an impressive portfolio of lighting technologies that are a real asset to Faurecia and its Clarion Electronics activities,” said Jan Robertson, Director of Growth Investments at Scotland Development Corporation.
“We, who have supported the growth of designLED, are excited to see how it evolves under Faurecia’s global control.”
DesignLED’s backlight technology can be adapted to virtually any automotive surface, including complex displays and interiors. Design LEDs, combined with Irystec’s work in image experience and processing, enable Faurecia to develop new types of backlights for use cases that promote safety, personalization, and convenience.
French suppliers say this gives Faurecia Clarion Electronics more freedom in designing new generation displays that can be integrated into any type of cockpit configuration.
“This is a very important and exciting milestone in the evolution of designLED,” added designLED, CEO of Stuart Bain.
“In recent years, we have founded a company as a leader in automotive lighting and HMI innovation, with a highly skilled and energetic team that already offers groundbreaking services as well as an extensive technology and intellectual property portfolio. We are also building a reputation based on our lighting solutions for international OEM and Tier 1 customers.
“For the future, the designLED team can leverage Faurecia’s global reach, international customer base, engineering and manufacturing skills to accelerate the adoption of differentiated display and backlight technologies. ”
Edouardda Silva, Director of Global Product Lines for Display at Clarion Electronics, said: “Design LED technology and teams enrich Faurecia’s display technology ecosystem.
“Immersive experiences are rapidly becoming a determinant of mobility, and we aim to strengthen Faurecia’s position in the cockpit user experience through the acquisition of designLED.”
The M & A process was managed by Munich-based Aquin & Cie on behalf of designLED and its shareholders. Addleshaw Goddard Glasgow acted as legal advisor to the seller.
