Omaha, Nebraska (KMTV) —It started as a normal day. Senator Ben Nelson remembers arriving at his office after having breakfast with his supporters on September 11, 2001. His staff gathered around the television when the second plane collided with the World Trade Center South Tower.
3 NewsNow reporter Jon Kipper had a detailed conversation with former Senator and Governor of Nebraska about the impact of the day and the last two decades.
He said they knew the United States was in a state of war soon, but didn’t know who we were with. He said the Senate wasn’t technically ready to deal with the case at the time, but he and his staff felt safe.
Democrat Nelson also looked back on the aftermath of 9/11, including the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq until the recent withdrawal from Afghanistan.
