ST. Louis (KMOV.com)-Lancehuff is a retired elderly person living in St. Louis who does not use air conditioning because a thief stole copper from an outdoor condenser. Due to the recent heat, the situation inside his house is getting tougher.
“It was basically rough. It’s hot, it’s very hot,” Huff said. He uses bonds and can’t afford repairs or air conditioning for window units. The only thing he found was $ 700.
Huff’s daughter heard that she might be able to get help from Cooldown St. Louis, so she reached out. Gentry Trotter, founder of Cool Down St. Louis, said that older people who get their air conditioners out often turn their air conditioners stronger and don’t ask for help.
“When you’re a senior, don’t try to beat the heat. The heat beats you,” Trotter said.
Huff was qualified to help, and a group of firefighters from the St. Louis Fire Department brought a window unit air conditioner to his home and installed it for him.
“I think that’s a great thing they did,” Huff said.
Only the elderly and disabled are eligible for free air conditioning or fans. Organizations also have programs that provide energy support, but only for low- or middle-income people.
