Serena Williams will not play at the 2022 Australian Open.
After the tournament released an entry list that did not include Williams’ name, speculation about the tennis star’s participation in the first Grand Slam in 2022 increased.
In a statement to the tournamentFormer world’s number one tennis player confirmed that she would not attend the event.
“With the advice of my medical team, I decided to withdraw from this year’s Australian Open,” Williams said.
Williams hasn’t played a professional tennis match since he was forced to retire in the first round of Wimbledon due to a hamstring injury.
“I’m not a place where I have to physically compete,” said Williams’ statement.
It’s unclear if Williams will play again in Australia. After losing in the Australian Open semi-finals in 2021, Williams said he wouldn’t tell anyone if it was her “farewell” match.
