Las Vegas (KLAS) – Shipment delays can last for months, as pandemics stubbornly seize major supply chains around the world, according to retail experts.
Brian Wachter, senior vice president of the Nevada Retail Association, said he was cautiously optimistic for the fall and holiday shopping season. Some consumers have more disposable income, thanks to government spending programs such as tax credits for children.
However, consumer confidence fell slightly in August.
“We are still working on complications from the closure of the Suez Canal (March),” Wachter said. “In China, many ports are down due to the recent surge due to the COVID delta variant. In fact, China’s third largest port is now offline.”
All of this can lead to delays in the coming months.
“We are lined with container ships and cannot enter the harbor,” Wachter said. “These issues may materialize during the holiday season.”
According to Wachter, retailers are encouraging consumers to start shopping earlier this year for the holiday season in case shipping problems continue.
