Should surfers wear helmets? Concussions an increasing concern in growing sport – Portland, Oregon

((((KTLA) – Former professional big wave surfer and photographer Derek Danfi said he was riding a 50-foot wave.

However, the San Diego surfer’s career ended after more than 20 concussion, with one eye almost blind.

“We have a lot of preparation for these wipeouts, but there’s not much we can do to prepare for it, especially when we’re hit by a 50-foot wave, especially in terms of head injuries and concussion,” Dunfee said. I did. ..

Dr. Christopher Giza, director of the UCLA Steve Tissue Brain Sports Program, said several studies examining brain damage in surfing have found that the number of concussion has increased over the last two decades.

“One of the possibilities is to have more people in the sport, so more people in the sport can get injured at the same rate,” Giza said.

But now, Giza said, “There really isn’t a culture that pays attention to head injuries in surfing.”

“There is certainly no culture of wearing a helmet,” he added.

Terry Simms, founder of Simba Surf Helmets, wants to change that.

Sims estimated that the number of California surfers doubled from 1 million to nearly 2 million during the pandemic.

Simms encourages all surfers (surfers who started their hobbies during pandemics and multi-year professionals) to wear a helmet. Not all concussion can be prevented, but it helps protect the surfer when hit by sand, coral reefs, or the board itself.

“It’s not the size of the waves. In fact, it has nothing to do with it. When it’s your time, it’s your time. And it’s that period,” Sims said.

He and other helmet supporters may be making progress.

Former professional surfer Dunfee said he is beginning to notice changes when it comes to surfing headgear.

“I had multiple concussion with a small wave, and these are what I know more,” Dunfee said. “Many people wear helmets. I recommend it.”

Simms said it’s a positive trend that will continue to be important as surfing seems to continue to grow.

“This is not only a way to really help surfing, but also a way to protect our future as our children, because that is the beginning of everything.”
