Temperatures are dropping across the United States this week as the first day of winter, also known as the winter solstice, takes place across the United States and the Northern Hemisphere.

The event begins on Wednesday, December 21st at 4:48 PM ET. According to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

On the day of the solstice, the Earth either moves toward or away from the Sun and has a maximum tilt of 23.5 degrees.

The winter solstice is the day when the northern hemisphere tilts away from the sun and the sun is at its lightest. The sun is above the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere Through Australia, Chile, southern Brazil, northern South Africa, According to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
