Corpus Christi, Texas — Sister Miragros Tormo is the chairman of Ark, a center and emergency shelter for young people.

She has contributed to the lives of many children during her nearly 50-year stay at Corpus Christi.

Tormo says she loves to make a difference and remembers the way she got to where she is today.

“At that time, I didn’t know English words, so I had to learn and know the culture,” she said.

It was in 1971 when she was 23 years old. In the new country, she left behind her family and everything she knew in Madrid, Spain.

Her first mission as a nun was El Paso, and six months later she went to Corpus Christi. But her journey to become a sister in the consecrated life began when she was 19 years old.

“There were so many adjustments, but people were very kind to me, my sisters, and the community,” Tormo said.

She says she was able to work towards her mission because Jesus, Mary, the sisters of Joseph’s missionaries, and the community made her feel at home.

“I don’t want anyone to see me, I don’t want anyone to see the dollar sign, but I want my child to be visible on my forehead,” she said.

Tormo has been working towards that goal for the past 21 years since opening ARK, a compassionate space for being abused, ignored and expelling children and teens.

In collaboration with Executive Secretary Danny Trejo, they have grown from accommodating 13 children in the retreat house to building new spaces for up to 37 children.

“In my case, God needs me, so he gave me everything I needed to help the child,” Tormo said.

But Tormo says she can’t take all the credit. ARK volunteers work daily to raise funds, accept donations, and of course continue to care for their children.

“I’m here, I’m part of this team, and I plan to keep doing whatever I can,” she said.

While thousands of miles away from where she was born, Tormo said Texas and Coastal Bend had accepted her.

Currently, there are 14 children under the control of ARK. The oldest is 5 years old and the youngest is only a few months.

The organization is accepting donations.
