Raleigh, NC-Skateboarding has changed dramatically since its early days as a subculture of Southern California. The once-male-dominated sport, which culminated in its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, continues to change. Raleigh’s latest skateboarding group, Skate Forward, is at the forefront of that change, promoting inclusiveness in North Carolina’s central skate community.

“There are far more girls here because we have some kind of language out there,” says early group member Bruklyn Miller. She explains that their goal was to create a safe space for those who have historically been excluded from sports: women, lgbtq +, and people of color.

“Skate forwards fill the void in the lack of female representatives in the skating community,” fellow member Oliver Wolf tells us. However, the group goes beyond recreational exchanges to raise funds that allow it to donate money and clothing to Raleigh’s Women’s Center. As Olivia points out, “we are definitely more than just a skate group.”
