2 killed, girl injured as hot air balloon bursts into flames outside Mexico City

Two people were killed and a girl injured when a hot air balloon they were riding in burst into flames near Mexico City on Saturday, authorities said.

Officials in the Mexican state next to the capital said the girl suffered burns and a broken arm.

According to videos of the incident posted on social media, the balloon crew appeared to have fallen or jumped off the ship.

The Daily Mail put the deaths as 50-year-old men and 38 women. The victims have been identified as Jose Nolasco and his wife Viridiana Becerril, local officials said. report.

“The Cuajimalpa Mayor’s Office extends its condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of José Nolasco and Viridiana Becerril, who died this morning following the collapse of their hot air balloon in Teotihuacan.” Said in a Facebook statement.

The statement did not say whether there were other passengers in the balloon.

The accident occurred near the pre-Hispanic ruins of Teotihuacan, just north of Mexico City. This area is a popular spot for balloon rides.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Home to the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and Avenue of the Dead, Teotihuacan is a popular tourist destination, with pre-Columbian monuments.
