Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) —Tucson is no exception, as gun violence is on the rise in cities across the country. One unit at the Tucson Police Station is specifically focused on resolving each crime.
“We appear on the scene. I usually triage by the number of witnesses, the number of suspects in custody. Do I need to issue a search warrant,” said Sergeant Ben Soltero.
The unit arrives at the scene after the first responding officer. They use information from the corresponding police officers to begin connecting crime scenes.
When they connect crime scenes, they collect different types of evidence. This usually includes guns, shell casings, DNA, and available digital evidence. This may include surveillance cameras, cell phone data, and Wi-Fi towers.
“It all leaves a digital fingerprint,” Soltero said.
During this process, they must capture every aspect of the crime scene to get the big picture for when the case is brought to justice.
“It’s important to portray the scene exactly as it is,” says Soltero.
Part 2 of this series shows how bullets are breaking open cases and how TPD processed the evidence collected.
