People have been talking about ghosts and fantastic creatures for centuries, and South Texas is no exception. To get a feel for the eerie season, here’s an unforgettable selection of stories found in old Caller-Times cutouts.

Green woman

One of the timeless ghost stories comes from the descendants of the Empresario James McGloin, who came to South Texas at the request of the Mexican government to encourage Irish Catholics to settle in San Patricio. The story has appeared in several Caller-Times articles over the years, including longtime columnist Bill Walraben. According to the McGroin family, James McGroin was a close friend of Lieutenant Marcelino García, a Mexican Army officer and commander of Fort Lipantitlán. Garcia was injured in a skirmish at the fort in 1835 and was taken to McGloin’s house for recovery. As Garcia’s condition deteriorated, McGloin wrote a letter to Garcia’s lover in Mexico to inform him of his deterioration in health.
