This year, two new staff members have joined the Mayor of Portland’s office in the top position so far.

Communication Director Jim Middau resigned two weeks ago to become Secretary-General of the Multnomah County Drainage District. Its mission is to mitigate flood risk by maintaining the county embankment system, managing drainage and responding to emergencies. Prior to joining Wheeler’s staff, Middaugh was Metro’s Communications Director and former Commissioner Erik Sten’s City Hall.

And Deputy Chief of Staff Sonia Schmannski will resign on Friday, May 29th. She previously worked for the late Commissioner Nik Fish and said it was time to explore life outside the city hall.

Wheeler has replaced a relatively large number of top-ranked employees since taking office as mayor in 2016, but staff turnover is not uncommon in city halls. Cleaning work in Portland.
