Columbia, South Carolina (WBTW) —The South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) has extended the Red Flag Fire Alert until Friday.
According to the committee, warnings continue to be issued to prevent outdoor burning as the situation increases the risk of wildfires. Humidity does not rise to normal levels overnight, which can lead to dry fuel and faster ignition the next day.
The alert is valid until it is cleared by the committee. The commission is hoping to lift the alert after Friday, and it will rain throughout the state on Saturday.
“In the first two days of this Red Flag fire department, more than 70 wildfires broke out in every corner of the state, and we want to pose a danger to those who may be considering burning outdoors.” Said Darryl Jones, chief of the SCFC Fire Department.
The Red Flag Fire Alert does not prohibit outdoor burning, but it is not strongly recommended. Residents are advised to check with the local fire department as local ordinances may limit or prohibit fires.
