South Fulton, Georgia (CBS46) — All Thanksgiving cooks are familiar with controlled chaos, but probably not as much as South Fulton’s mom.
Renee Mumford cooks for the family, but not before the family works for others. They spent days preparing Thanksgiving meals for South Fulton firefighters.
“We started on Sunday,” Mumford said. “We stayed up until 1am every night. Last night it was until 4:30 am.”
Their efforts paid off as they delivered a box of homemade meals with turkey, desserts and fixtures on Thursday.
Mumford explained that food is not just for first responders. She says they are a family.
Firefighters at South Fulton Station 7 first responded to a tragic accident that killed two Mumford sons in 2016.
“It’s difficult, but when we put God first, it helps us move,” Mumford said. “We couldn’t move without him.”
No one can replace the child, but Mumford’s family grew up despite her loss.
“You have to understand, I’ve become the mother of everyone,” she said.
Among those eating today is Mumford’s second son, Gerel. Gerel became a South Fulton firefighter the year after his brother died.
“Many of these people are my brothers, not biologically, but brothers of another mother,” he said.
Family members say that Thanksgiving is a day to share meals and messages of gratitude with others, by blood and choice.
“It’s not priced,” Gerel explained. “That’s the purpose of Thanksgiving. You can get this and that, but if you don’t have family and friends, what is it for?”
