Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA) – The Spartanburg City Council has advanced its first reading on a ban on openly carrying guns at city-approved events in Spartanberg.
During the first reading of the ordinance at the City Council meeting on Monday night, members of Congress unanimously voted to ban the outdoor carrying of firearms during city-approved events on public property. ..
Councilor Erica Brown told Seven News that the ban applies to city-wide permitted events such as festivals and protests. The council can do this through the terms of the Open Carry with Training Act.
Mr Brown said voting cannot be timely.
“Unless you live under a rock, you’ll see the city of Spartanberg have had considerable gun violence lately,” said Erica Brown, city council member of Spartanberg.
Kyle Marlow is passionate about guns. He taught us to use them especially safely. In fact, he calls himself a supporter of Article 2 of the Constitutional Amendment.
“South Carolina is doing it the right way. It’s an open carry and training law, so you have to do all the training and background checks,” said Kyle Marlowe’s T & K Outdoors manager.
But that said, he told us he understood the intent behind the ban on protests.
“Encourage all these people to obey all the laws, whether at the city, state, or federal level,” Marlowe told us.
Leaders in the city of Spartanberg said on Monday night that the new ban was not intended to violate the rights of Article 2 of the Constitutional Amendment.
The Spartanberg City Council unanimously voted in support of this ban. The second reading is scheduled for the next meeting two weeks later.
