St. Louis City Libraries Offer Free WiFi to Residents in Need – St. Louis, Missouri

Residents of St. Louis who need the internet at home but cannot afford the internet can seek help from a branch office in the public library in St. Louis. The St. Louis Public Library recently purchased 4,000 hotspots for people in need. Families can check out the hotspots and keep them until June 30, 2022.

Hotspots are small pocket-sized WiFi devices that individuals can use anywhere. The device can connect up to 15 smartphones, computers, or tablets to the Internet. Libraries were able to acquire devices through the Emergency Connection Fund, a federal program that helps libraries and schools provide Internet connectivity to the community.

“The Internet is essential for access to government and community resources, employment opportunities and knowledge, and many still lack that access,” Mayor Tishaura Jones said in a press release. “The St. Louis Public Library has always sought to break down barriers within our community. By providing hotspots to those who need it most, they continue that tradition. Family technology I am grateful for their dedication to helping to overcome the disparity. ”

The St. Louis Public Library offers one hotspot per family and does not count unpaid fees for library cardholders considering booking a hotspot.

Waller McGuire, CEO of the St. Louis Public Library, said the pandemic revealed that the Internet was “no longer a luxury, but a lifeline.” McGuire added that the digital divide is a painful challenge for many of St. Louis, but providing hotspots allows thousands of St. Louis people to bring back a solution.

Many of the hotspots are still available since the program was announced last week, and library spokespersons RFT.. Anyone who wants to check out the device must be a resident of the city of St. Louis, who does not have internet access. WiFi for educational purposes.Individuals also have to already have a library card or sign up when they do Visit one of St. Louis’ 16 public library branches and check out the hotspots.
