ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) – Police in St. Louis County are looking for a woman who allegedly refused to treat her baby with HIV medication.
Britneyeaunya Blackmon, 32, in 11900 blocks of Elsabad Drive, was charged with one case of child abuse or neglect. She is not detained and has no vehicle. Police believe she may be in the St. Louis area or near Cape Girardeau.
Authorities claim that Blackmon was said to have been tested positive for HIV during pregnancy. The doctor advised her to take medication to prevent her child from being born with HIV, but she was reportedly refused and the child was born with HIV.
Doctors warned Blackmon of the risks associated with not taking the drug, but she repeatedly ignored the warning, officials said. Medical records reportedly show a significant increase in viral load in the 1-year-old system. Due to the high altitude, police said the baby was at high risk of serious infection or death.
St. Louis County police said the Children’s Division had obtained a protection order through the St. Louis County Family Court, but Blackmon did not appear in court proceedings. She has also not handed over her child to the authorities.
Police have not published pictures of children. Crimes against humanity and accident recovery team detectives at the St. Louis County Police Department are leading the investigation. If you have any information, we recommend contacting the St. Louis County Police Department (314-615-5400).
