Officials on St. Vincent Island in the eastern Caribbean said they believed the active volcano was at risk of an explosion and ordered a forced evacuation.

The island’s Emergency Management Agency switched alert levels to red on Wednesday, saying the first cruise line would arrive that night to evacuate people living near Las Friere volcano. It was not immediately clear how many people would evacuate, where the ship would take, or whether it would be a temporary embarkation.

Officials said they could see the volcanic dome in the northern part of the island shining by nightfall.

A small island that is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The population of the island is 100,000. The most populous part of the island is on the southern tip of the island, on the other side of the island, and is the least dangerous as of Thursday night.
