‘Star Trek’ actor William Shatner will fly to space aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket – Fresno, California

Cape Canaveral, Florida-Captain Kirk will dive into space next week-boldly to places that no other science fiction actor has ever been to.

Jeff Bezos’ space travel company Blue Origin announced on Monday that “Star Trek” actor William Shatner will blow up from western Texas on October 12.

“Yes, that’s true. I’ll be a’Rocketman’!” Tweeted 90-year-old Twitter. “It’s never too late to experience something new,” he added.

Amazon founder Bezos is a big fan of the science fiction series and has also made a cameo appearance as a high-ranking alien in the 2016 movie Star Trek Beyond. His rocket company invited Shatner to fly as a guest.

Shatner will be the oldest person to go to space. He rides a Blue Origin capsule and joins three other people, two of whom are paid customers. He would have been the first actor in space if Russia hadn’t launched an actress and film director on the International Space Station on Tuesday for filmmaking for almost two weeks.

By comparison, Shatner’s flight lasts only 10 minutes, reaching less than about 66 miles (106 km). The capsule parachutes back to the desert floor not far from where it took off.

Whether the flight is short or long, space travel is gaining momentum rapidly.

Virgin Galactic brought founder Richard Branson to the edge of the universe with five others in July, followed by Bezos’ space hops nine days later. Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched its first private crew last month. An entrepreneur in Pennsylvania bought a three-day flight and took two contest winners and one cancer survivor.

Virgin Galactic ships depart from planes and require two pilots. Blue Origin and SpaceX capsules are fully automated, but passengers must pass medical screening, especially to quickly climb several stairs from the launch tower to reach the capsule or in an emergency. Must be able to.

This will be Blue Origin’s second crew launch.

Bezos made his debut flight on July 20th. He took the brother of Wally Funk, an 18-year-old Dutch aviation pioneer, the youngest and oldest in space flight. Shatner will break that limit in eight years.

“I’ve heard about the universe for a long time. I’m taking the opportunity to see it myself. What a miracle,” Shatner said in a statement.

Shatner served as commander of the USS Starship Enterprise for three seasons from 1966 to 1969. He also played Captain Kirk in seven films, directing one of them. He is currently the host and executive producer of the history channel show “The UnXplained.”

It is also flying with Shatner. A former NASA engineer who founded the nanosatellite company, he is a co-founder of a software company specializing in clinical research. The two participated in an auction of seats for their first flight. The cost of that seat was $ 28 million. Blue Origin does not disclose other ticket prices.

The fourth seat on the flight will be Blue Origin’s Vice President of Mission and Flight Operations.

Last week, more than 20 current and former Blue Origin employees accused the Kent, Washington-based company of having a toxic work environment and not adhering to proper safety protocols. Blue Origin said it did not tolerate harassment or discrimination and supported safety records.

The Bezos company is also challenging the NASA contract award to SpaceX to provide a lunar lander that will return astronauts to the moon within a few years. Blue Origin failed to bid for the job.
