Starbucks to let people use their own reusable mugs again – with some changes – Fresno, California

Seattle–Starbucks will once again allow customers to bring their mugs to US company-owned cafes starting June 22nd.

Prior to the pandemic, coffee chains encouraged customers to bring their reusable mugs to the store. However, in March of last year, Starbucks suspended programs around the world due to the coronavirus. Starbucks is gradually returning it to the international market and is now ready to resume the program in the United States with some changes.

Prior to the pandemic, the barista was cleaning the visibly dirty mugs before refilling them. But now, employees only accept and never touch clean mugs. Instead, the customer puts his cup in a large ceramic mug. The barista holds the handle of the ceramic mug instead of the cup when preparing the drink. When the drink is ready, the customer lifts the cup out of the mug. Personal mugs that do not fit are placed on the tray.

Starbucks will also resume serving drinks in reusable mugs for those who plan to drink in-store. Customers passing through a Starbucks drive-through must receive their drink in a Starbucks disposable cup.

Starbucks has long sought to reduce waste by developing environmentally friendly disposable cups and increasing the number of customers using reusable mugs.

It’s much easier to get a take-away cup and throw it away when you’re done with it than to remember to bring your own mug or return the mug provided by the store. But if Starbucks doesn’t offer that option, there is a risk that competitors will lose their environmentally friendly customers. And this concept is gaining popularity. Companies from Burger King to McDonald’s are testing reusable packages.

To reduce the use of disposable cups in stores, Starbucks offers a discount of only 10 cents to those who bring their own mugs. We also tested the price of disposable cups in Germany and the United Kingdom. This spring, several Seattle stores began testing a “rent a cup” program that allows customers to order drinks in reusable cups. To participate, the customer must pay a $ 1 refundable deposit. When they have finished drinking, they must either return the cup or come from home to recover the deposit.
