A bipartisan coalition of state attorney generals announced a $ 26 billion domestic settlement on Wednesday with four US companies that manufactured and distributed opioid analgesics, despite a surge in addiction and overdose deaths.

“The opioid epidemic has torn families and killed thousands of North Carolina citizens,” said North Carolina Attorney General Joshstein.

The deal will force North Carolina and other states that have signed the settlement to “force these pharmaceutical companies to pay historic amounts to provide the long-awaited treatment and recovery services,” Stein said.

The state has 30 days to decide whether to accept the deal. The local government will sign on within 150 days.

The final payment by a company depends on the number of governments that have agreed to suspend the opioid proceedings.

The three drug distributors will spread $ 21 billion in payments over 18 years. Johnson & Johnson will donate $ 5 billion over nine years.

In a statement, Johnson & Johnson, which pays about $ 5 billion, said the settlement “directly supports state and local efforts to make meaningful progress in dealing with the opioid crisis.”

J & J once again denied fraud in opioid manufacturing and marketing and described the behavior as “appropriate and responsible.”

However, as part of this agreement, J & J has agreed to no longer manufacture opioid drugs.

The company voluntarily stopped selling prescription opioids last year.

At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, the state Attorney General mentioned the devastating loss of life in the United States since the pharmaceutical industry began aggressively selling opioid analgesics in the late 1990s.

Death due to overdose occurs 93,000 new records for 2020, Primarily driven by an increase in deaths associated with synthetic opioid fentanyl.
