(Updated at 11:15 am) Arlington’s I-395 was the scene of a wheel shootout last night.
Virginia police say a shootout was exchanged between two cars bound north between Shirlington and Pentagon City. One driver was shot dead and seriously injured, but the other vehicle (Nissan Maxima with Texas license plate) remains large.
The shooting prompted a temporary closure of the I-395 northbound near the Pentagon last night.

“At 10:36 pm on November 18, Virginia State Police said Toyota Corolla and Nissan Maxima were in a gun battle as the vehicle was heading north on I-395, just south of S. Glebe Road. I received a call, “said a state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller this morning. “Toyota was fired again when the same two vehicles passed the elevated S. Joyce Street.”
The Toyota driver was shot but continued to drive into the district. He stopped at a subway station, received first aid from police, and was taken to the trauma center at GW Hospital for a “serious but non-life-threatening injury.”
WTOP reports that the victim was an employee of the metro and was shot in the shoulder in an incident called the “Clear Road Anger Incident.” No guns were recovered from the victim’s vehicle.
State police are investigating the shooting, noting that “there is no evidence that other vehicles were fired or damaged during the shooting process.”
“We haven’t found a dark-colored Nissan Maxima with a Texas plate yet,” Geller said. “If you may have witnessed the incident or have information about the suspect’s vehicle, please call the Virginia State Police (703-803-0026) or email us. [email protected]”
