Colorado Springs, Colorado (KOAA)-According to the Epilepsy Foundation, epilepsy affects 1 in 26 people in the United States.

Marissa Cardenas, senior at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, said:

She was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 10.

Cardenas says few people understand the type of isolation and fear she once felt when trying to explain her disability to her peers.

“I need to tell people about my safety, but I don’t know how people will react, so that’s the burden,” she said.

It wasn’t until she found the Epilepsy Foundations in Colorado and Wyoming that she felt understood that she became an advocate of awareness.

“It’s probably the most changing thing in my life. It got me out of my shell,” she said.

Cardenas attended their camp, where she met other children like her.

Eleven years later, Cardenas has the opportunity to lead the camp and help children in the same fight as before.

“You may have to take it differently than others, but in the long run, you can do anything with just a change to suit your lifestyle,” Cardenas said.
