Clemson, South Carolina (WSPA) – The “Back the Blue” rally sparked several controversies on Thursday at the Clemson University campus.
The Clemson branch of “Turning Point USA” hosted a rally at the University’s Little John Coliseum. The “Back the Blue” event featured conservative speakers and Foxnation hosts Tomi Lahren, Brandon Tatum, and Graham Allen.
Laren has been accused of racism, homophobia, and sexism. Dozens of students protested prior to Thursday’s rally and asked the university to inform them that they were not happy with the decision to have Laren speak.
“Clemson became famous for advocating Black Lives. Just letting her talk about all the racist things she said, such as comparing Black Lives Matter to the KKK, would be very much. Is inconsistent with, “said protester Deasia Rush.
She said the college Democrats were not given the same opportunity.
“We tried to get one of the speakers to come to campus, but Clemson said no because it was too radical, but we let Tomi Lahren talk,” Rush said.
Topics discussed at the rally on Thursday included politics, Black Lives Matter, and politics.
Proponents say they were there because of the cause.
“Honestly, I have a lot of friends and family at home. There are people in my life who are involved in law enforcement,” said supporter RJ Kora. “I thought I had a duty to come out to them, listen to what people had to say, and pay homage to showing their support.”
“Today, it’s very important for us to help the police more than ever,” said supporter Jonathan Evans. “They don’t get the respect they deserve.”
For Daniel Ramos, he said it was the cause and who was behind it.
“I don’t think police officers have paid enough respect these days, especially in last year’s climate,” Ramos said. “They just died with little or no benefit, and it was really hard for the speakers.”
Clemson police said the protesters had left shortly after the rally began.
