Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — Sunnyside Foundation We started our first 5K run at Mission Manor Park on Sunday morning. There was a purpose behind every step beyond the starting line.
“Raise money for students and families in the Sunnyside School District, and for students and families throughout the wider Southside community,” explained Patrick Robles, director of the Sunnyside Foundation.
According to Robles, the foundation aims to raise $ 100,000 for students and their families this year.
“This money helps students succeed because educators can apply for grants through our foundation to help them pay for supplies. You can also apply for grants to pay for field trips. Students can also apply for scholarships, families pay utilities, bills.
He said last year 11,000 people benefited from the grant. This year, they want to double the number, especially following the obstacles presented during the pandemic.
“Zip code seriously affected by this pandemic. We are on the south side — 85756 [and] 85706. So now we are bringing together these same people to help the same family who have been adversely affected but are still being adversely affected. “
Clubs that volunteer in the race, such as J-ROTC at Desert View High School, may benefit from funding.
Senior Rosalie Coronado said it was great to see many support her community.
“We can help many unhappy students who don’t have to continue,” she said.
As the runners cross the finish line, the Foundation is looking forward to a block party at Lawry’s on Wednesday and will continue to raise funds for South Side students.
