Alton, Illinois (KTVI) — Illinois supermarket employees were in the right place at the right time when they saved their baby in a runaway shopping cart.
Ben Mazur, a courtesy clerk at Schnucks, was obliged to cart on March 17th when he realized something was wrong.
“I saw this big shopping cart roll down the parking lot,” Mazur said.
Kurt and the kid headed straight toward the stop sign, so he sprinted through the parking lot and caught it.
“I stopped doing what I was doing and saved my baby,” he said. The child was unharmed.
Mazur said the mother was taking care of the other children when Kurt began to roll.
“Mom had other children in the car and they were honking to get her attention,” he said.
Mazur was praised by a colleague at the store. “My cashier … said,’Saving the baby is a good job!'” Mazur said.
Tom Moore, co-manager of Schnucks Alton, said the store has a sloping parking lot and the carts are spinning at high speeds. He praises Mazur for his heroic behavior.
“The quick thoughts on Ben’s side saved the baby. Congratulations, Ben, you’re a hero!” Moore said.
Mazur is sending a message to his parents. “Put your child in the car first and then unload the groceries.”
