A 31-year-old man was arrested on Monday for the death of a security guard known to residents of the Long Beach estate. His kind greeting and warm smile brightened the day.

On Tuesday, police arrested 31-year-old Quentin Darnell Black in Moreno Valley in connection with the crash. He was booked on suspicion of manslaughter of the vehicle due to one count of gross negligence and felony hit-and-run, resulting in death or injury.

Bail was set at $ 100,000.

It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

Residents, many of whom are familiar with the guards, said they were in the guards’ hut when Smith was attacked by the SUV.

Smith always had a friendly smile and greetings, said the sad residents.

“He was a good person,” said the resident. “Everyone here liked him. Everyone knew him. He would brighten your day. He had a real, real smile.”

Smith worked for several years in a Century Village home. The complex, located in 2000 blocks on River Avenue, provides short-term and permanent housing for endangered people and veterans.

“Every time I came here, he waved and smiled,” said one woman. “He was kind to everyone.”

The guard hut was destroyed in the crash. According to officials, the driver apparently escaped from the scene.

“I heard a crash, but I thought it was a train,” said one witness. “It looked like a little tornado.”
