Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA) – People gathered in front of the Sheriff’s Office in Spartanburg County on Wednesday paid tribute to the 25-year-old Deputy Assistant Secretary Austin Derek Aldridge, who was killed during his duties.

A monument was set up and filled with balloons, flowers and memos.

“I didn’t stop crying,” said Sokoro War.

War took the children to the sheriff’s office and made them bloom for Aldridge.

“It’s about being a community,” she said. “We are here to back up each other no matter what.”

Aldridge was part of the sheriff’s office for three years. He was called to Chafy Road’s house on Tuesday for a domestic violence call. Sheriff Chuck Wright said he was shot when he approached the house.

“He was ambushed,” Wright said.

The suspect was identified as Duane Heard. He was charged with murder and possession of weapons during a violent crime.

Wright said he was leading another lieutenant chasing Anderson Mill Road towards Highway 290 after the shooting. Shots were exchanged when the adjutant tried to stop the traffic. He then crashed his car he heard and hit the woods. He was arrested and taken to the hospital

“They detained this man without firing at him,” Wright said. “I can’t be any more proud of having a team here. We love our family.”

Aldrigde left behind his wife, family and friends who loved him dearly. Daniel McCabi told 7News that he had been friends with Aldridge for over five years. “We lived a kind and compassionate life that we should strive to imitate,” he said.

“He’s a really good young man,” Wright said. “He’s what we’re all looking for when we want someone to do the right thing. I’m very proud of him and all of his short three-year achievements here.”

South Carolina Law Enforcement Department continues to investigate shootings.
