KOIN, Portland, Oregon — Police officers arrested suspects in a series of armed robbery and shootings in the Curry district of northeastern Portland.

Just before 2:00 am on Wednesday, officials from the Portland Police Department’s Special Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team arrested 28-year-old Michael Darnell Cunningham at 5900 blocks on Northeast Killingsworth Street.

Police said Cunningham was armed with a pistol because the police had served an arrest warrant, but numerous police forces on the scene prevented him from fleeing. Despite distance negotiations, Cunningham refused to surrender, and police said police helped detain him with a police dog.

Cunningham was sought after in a series of incidents that began on the morning of July 3 when police responded to reports of a man shooting a gun in the air on 60th Street northeast and Killingsworth Street northeast. Police said the man could not be found at the time.

Then, on the afternoon of July 8, a 6000-block store on 60th Northeast Street was struck by a gun and robbed. No one was injured. Police said the undiscovered suspect at the time was the same person who fired on July 3.

According to police, the following incident occurred after multiple shots at a company person in block 5900 of NE Killingsworth Street shortly after noon on July 21st. The victim was unharmed, but again police were unable to find the suspect. Investigators concluded that this was the same person as in the previous case.

Another business was struck by a gun and robbed on Tuesday morning. This time it was 5800 blocks on Northeast Prescott Street. No one was injured. The suspect’s description was consistent with the suspect in other cases.

The next day, when police arrested Cunningham, they reportedly found guns and other evidence related to the aforementioned crimes.

Cunningham was detained in Multnomah County Detention Center for two attempted murders, one attempted assault, two robbers, and three illegal use of weapons.
