Copenhagen Denmark — Magdalena Anderson resigned Wednesday after breaking a budget in parliament hours after becoming Sweden’s first female prime minister, and coalition partner Greens left the minority government of the two major parties. .. The government’s own budget was rejected in support of what was presented by opposition parties, including the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats.

The Swedish Democrats, the country’s third-largest political party, has roots in the national neo-Nazi movement, but has since denied fascism.

The negative votes were 154-143, in favor of the opposition’s budget.

Anderson, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, decided that it would be best to resign more than seven hours after becoming the first woman to lead the country and making history.

“For me, it’s a respect, but I don’t want to lead a government that may have reason to doubt its legitimacy,” Anderson said at a press conference.

Anderson, who was the finance minister before becoming prime minister temporarily, told parliamentary chair Andreas Norlén that he was still interested in leading a one-party government of the Social Democratic Party.

Noren, chairman of Sweden’s 349-seat parliament, said he would contact the eight Swedish leaders “to discuss the situation.” On Thursday, he will announce the way ahead.

“The coalition government should resign if the party chooses to leave the government. It needs to be retried, even though the parliamentary situation remains the same,” Anderson said.

The Greens have withdrawn support for her government, but said they are ready to stand behind Anderson in a new vote to appoint a prime minister. But Greens said it was in the party’s best interests to elicit her support after a budget defeat in Congress.

The appointment of Prime Minister Anderson was a milestone for Sweden and was considered one of Europe’s most progressive countries in terms of gender relations for decades, but women still take the top political position. I wasn’t there.

Anderson replaced Stefan Löfven as leader and prime minister, who abandoned his role earlier this year.

Earlier that day, 117 lawmakers voted for Anderson, 174 refused her appointment, 57 abstained, and one was absent. Under the Swedish Constitution, a prime minister can be appointed and governed unless a majority of parliament (at least 175 members) opposes the prime minister.

Sweden’s next general election is scheduled for September 11.
