(NEXSTAR) — With a decision that will surely please vegetarians, Taco Bell announced Thursday that potatoes are back on the menu.
Starting March 11th, Cheese Fiesta Potatoes and Spicy Potatoes Soft Tacos will be back after the dissolution in August, in Taco Bell’s efforts to simplify the menu for the pandemic.
Last year, Taco Bell’s decision to drop potatoes sparked an online protest. Even Change.org’s “Petition for Taco Bell not to remove all potato items” has won over 5,000 signatures.
In a statement, Taco Bell’s Global Chief Food Innovation Officer, Rizma Shoes, said, “The resurrection of our beloved potatoes is to show fans our strong and ongoing commitment to vegetarians this year. It’s just the first step. ”
The two potato dishes feature a chain of seasoned potato bites certified as vegan by the American Vegetarian Society. Taco Bell currently uses more than 30 vegetarian ingredients in its US menu.
Taco Bell is also collaborating with Beyond Meat on a new plant-based protein to be tested this year.This will be the company’s first foray into plant-based meat in the United States
“This year, there are more meatless options in the store that vegetarians, vegetable lovers, and even meat eaters will love,” Matthews said.
