TAHOE (CBS13) — A young bear with an appetite is wandering around Tahoe.
Rescue teams said they were receiving non-stop calls for bears that appeared to be malnourished or ill. People are desperate to help, but rescue teams say that being away can save the bear’s life.
Earlier this year, BEAR League Anne Bryant said Tahoe’s neighbors were encountering a surge of young bears known as yearlings. They are about 15 months old and their mothers are leaving them for the first time.
“They think,’OK, we’ve taught you everything you need to know, and now you need to go out into the world and make something of your own,'” says Bryant. It was.
This is normal. Like teens, these bears cry. They often look confused. According to Brian, the baby’s hair still remains, so it looks like it’s missing fur.
“When people witness this, they really get angry,” she said.
All these teen bears want is a supper.
“They have to go find their territory. Bears are very territory,” said Sherry Guzzi of the Sierra Wildlife Union. “Unfortunately, people are often the easiest source of food.”
“They’re just sitting there and sad,” Bryant said. “As you know, can you help me get hungry?”
Brian is urging people to do the opposite. Bears need to learn to avoid contact with humans in order to survive in the wild and find their own food.
“You have to treat your child as if you were sending it to college,” says Bryant.
Don’t stand there and take pictures and tell them how cute they are and say,’I’m so sick of you, I wish you still had your mom.’ Hmm.
Instead, you should yell and make humans look dangerous – lessons about harsh love that can save the lives of wild animals.
Brian said there is plenty of natural food out there for these young bears. In spring, there are enough plants to grow and bears to flesh their bones.
