TAMPA — Teco and Duke Energy say they are warning customers about the long-term summer surge in fraudster fraud. Scammers target customers and try to convince them that they are late for their electricity bill. In the case of George Mitchson, the caller threatened to shut off the gas in 30 minutes if he did not pay.
Mitchesson, who lives in Pinellas County, says the caller had enough information to sound believable.
“It sounds like the real thing, it sounds like an office background.”
TECO told ABC Action News that customer reports are increasing this summer. So far this year, TECO users have lost $ 24,000 to scammers. Duke Energy also reported 930 complaints in July alone, with customer losses in excess of $ 14,000 that month.
In the case of Mitcheson, they confirmed and confirmed that the invoice was paid before giving the money to the caller.
