Target to Keep Stores Closed on Thanksgiving For Good – Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha, Nebraska 2021-11-25 06:00:00 –

Target will no longer open stores on Thanksgiving Day and will permanently transition to an informal start of the holiday season that was interrupted during the pandemic.

Last year’s retailers were forced to turn their weekend shopping blitz into an extended event that went on sale as early as October in order to limit the number of stores during a pandemic. That forced shift during the holidays turned out to be a good move.

According to the National Retail Federation, the largest retail group in the United States, sales on holidays in the United States in November and December 2020 increased by 8.2% year-on-year. Industry groups predict that this year will break last year’s record and have the potential to grow between 8.5% and 10.5%.

“What started as a temporary measure caused by a pandemic is now our new standard, which recognizes our ability to fulfill our guests’ holiday wishes both during and outside business hours. That’s what Target CEO Brian Cornell wrote in a note to employees.

Target’s new standards could encourage other retailers to follow that path, in addition to last year’s very strong sales.

Target said on Monday that there were some staff at Target’s distribution and call center on Thanksgiving Day, but the store remained closed.

Target opened its store on Thanksgiving 10 years ago, working with other retailers to start selling Black Friday a day earlier, creating a holiday rush after a turkey feast. Many have done so to compete with the rise of and other online threats.

But the shift seemed to just eat up Black Friday sales. Large retailers also suffered from some blowbacks as they forced thousands of people to work on family holidays.

Some stores and malls, such as the Mall of America in Minnesota, have finished their practice for Thanksgiving and have remained closed. Some people, like Costco and Nordstrom, couldn’t open the door during the holidays and said they wanted to respect the holidays.

Thanksgiving has historically not been one of the top ten, not a big sale day overall. This is because stores usually open around 5 pm. But it was a big online sale day. According to the Adobe Digital Economy Index, last year’s holiday season was only available online on Cyber Monday and Black Friday.
