Norwalk, Iowa — After receiving a gift of life just before Christmas, teens in Iowa are recovering at home.

18-year-old Brooklyn Soloka underwent heart transplant surgery on Christmas Eve after being on the transplant list for almost a year.

After spending 13 days in the hospital, Brooklyn returned home and was welcomed with a special surprise. On Tuesday afternoon, when Brooklyn returned home from the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the Norwalk Fire Department held a parade in honor of her.

Brooklyn’s surgery was done five years after his life was upset when he fainted in a PE class.

“That’s why she visited a pediatrician who introduced us to a cardiologist, who contracted her heart during our visit but relaxed during each beat. I decided not to, “said Brooklyn’s mother, Dana Soloka.

Doctors have diagnosed Brooklyn as mixed cardiomyopathy — a rare and life-threatening combination of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and restrictive cardiomyopathy. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is best known to be the cause of the sudden death of basketball players on the court.

The discovery forced Brooklyn to change her entire life. She could no longer participate in dance or gymnastics, or even travel without worrying about pain.

In February, Brooklyn was put on the organ transplant list in hopes of receiving a new heart. On December 23, Solokas received the long-awaited call. They were informed that the donor’s heart was available, and Brooklyn had surgery on Christmas Eve at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

When Brooklyn was asked what he enjoyed most after the transplant, he said, “Literally anything. I can work now, I haven’t been able to do it since sixth grade. I take a walk. You can go to Florida, you can go to Florida as you like, you can go and do something. “

Brooklyn said her family was the first to plan now that her home is an open Christmas gift.

The Soroka family says they are forever grateful to the donor’s family.
