Tulsa, Oklahoma — October is here. People are ready to commit themselves to the cool weather, jumbles, and the eerie spirit of Halloween.
Legend has it that there are many iconic locations throughout the Tulsa Metro area. Sounds, strange moods, and other eerie example claims can scare even brave people.
One such person who is willing to experience paranormal activities is Teri French, the creator of Tulsa Spirit Tours, who grew up watching Alfred Hitchcock’s films as a kid.
“I have always had an early and deep interest in paranormal phenomena,” says the French. “I actually got to work in a haunted place, which renewed my kind of interest.”
After seeing a picture that asked her some questions, the French turned to the internet to see what others had to say about the paranormal.
Then she set up the first paranormal research team in Oklahoma at the time. She says her research has discovered that there is real science behind ghosts that gives the story of ghosts the real truth.
“It’s a scientifically proven fact that we are made of energy,” says France. “We are emitting electrical impulses in our brains, so we can’t fill or kill that energy. So where does that energy go? I don’t know.”
This curiosity about energy led the French team to start ghost hunting. Ghost hunting wasn’t as popular as it is today when they first started in the 90’s. Currently, there are TV shows on ghost hunting and several movie franchises on paranormal phenomena.
From her research and the time spent on ghost hunting, the French learned an impressive amount of Tulsa’s history and urban legends. A close friend urged her to acquire her skills and start a ghost tour.
“Well, I said it looked fun,” said the French. “So I rented a trolley for a year and took people there. Believe it or not, I didn’t have Facebook at the time, so I threw it on MySpace. People got the next call I wanted to know when, so my phone came off the hook and rang continuously after that. “
The French initially thought the tour would be a one-off Halloween event, but 18 years later, the Tulsa Spirit Tour continues to perform well. She says people’s curiosity and fascination with Tulsa’s history is why they are still touring here.
“The tour is 90% of the history of Tulsa and many people enjoy that part,” says the French. Many people get off the tour saying, “I lived here for the rest of my life and didn’t know this.” “
But the French aren’t the only ones looking for ghosts and touring. She has spread to other roads. If you happen to be skeptical of ghosts or want to avoid ghosts altogether, she also offers classes on dream interpretation, tarot card reading, and more.
Whether touring or communicating knowledge about the paranormal, the French are always there to make sure that the spirit of Tulsa is alive and well.
