Baton Rouge, Louisiana (KLFY) —According to the Louisiana Department of Health, children between the ages of 5 and 11 died of COVID-19, the sixth death since the start of the fourth outbreak of the disease.
According to LDH, a total of 15 children under the age of 18 have died of COVID-19 in Louisiana.
“For the sixth time since this fourth COVID surge began, we mourn the loss of our children. Every life lost is a tragedy,” said Dr. Joseph Canter, State Health Officer. “Our young children who are not eligible to be vaccinated rely on us to protect them. The best way we can do is to vaccinate and wear a mask. “
LDH said no further information would be released regarding the death of the child.
LDH officials said that anyone over the age of 12 would be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine in Louisiana. The FDA has fully approved Pfizer’s Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine for everyone over the age of 16. Pfizer vaccines between the ages of 12 and 15 are licensed for emergency use. Parents should confirm with the vaccine provider that their child is under the age of 18 to ensure that Pfizer vaccine is available before making an appointment.
