Texarkana, Texas (KTAL / KMSS) – Investigators on either side of the Texarkana border have been investigating a series of fires in the downtown area over the past few weeks.
Three of the four fires in the area over the past three weeks have occurred within the last few days. On average, there are 10 fires a month, officials say. So far, there were nine last month. Some were in an abandoned house. A fire broke out at a popular local restaurant, TLC, and there is a “closed” sign on the door.
“It’s not common, but it has happened before,” said Texarkana of Texas Fire Chief, Chris Black. “I have one or two. Next, I’ll create those strings. As you know, it may or may not be a coincidence.”
Investigators are investigating the possibility that homeless people are behind a fire in some abandoned buildings.
“We believe it was human intervention that caused the fire. Homeless people are always looking for a place to stay in their homes, even if they are maliciously set to burn down buildings. They could have had candles or cooked something, “Black said.
Texas-based business owner Arthur Lindley states that the family owns one of the buildings destroyed in a recent fire since 1993. It was a furniture store. It wasn’t open, but Lindley says it was devastated.
“They called us and told us that someone had burned it,” Lindley said.
Lindley says neighbors and businesses around him said they saw a few homeless people wandering around his property just before the fire broke out.
“But it’s ridiculous for people to destroy the property of others,” Lindley said.
The fire department recommends that anyone with information report it to the fire department immediately.
“I know everyone thinks we have firebug or someone is running around setting them all up. But at the moment, any or all of these fires There is no information to imply one person set up, “Black said.
