When Michael Galvan took on the job of athletic director at Texas A & M-Texarkana in 2013, the school took the first step towards college sports with a little thought on paper. Fast forwarding to the present, TAMUT has just finished the most successful athletic season to date, and program architect Galvan has been named 2020-21 RRAC Athletic Director of the Year.
The RRAC Athletes Director of the Year Award is the best in overall program performance, facility development, game management, NAIA Champions of Character commitment, ability to hire and retain quality coaches, and program growth and contribution in sports and revenue opportunities. Awards for leaders who have spent their years at conferences, at the national level, and in training student athletes. This award is determined by voting by all RRAC athletic directors.
Galvan has always been a builder in nature. In his 2004-13 mission as an athletic director at his alma mater, the University of the Southwest, he expanded the program from three to thirteen sports. The athletic club he built from scratch at TAMUT currently has eight sports and two sparkling campus facilities. Galvan provided the director of a state-of-the-art soccer venue with an artificial turf field and played a central role in the creation of the multipurpose Patterson Center. Facilities include a home court for Eagles men’s and women’s basketball teams, a fitness center, group exercise rooms, motor skills labs, classrooms, student life centers and locker rooms.
“Awards like this are category awards because everyone in their lane needs to work in order to function properly,” says Galvan. “The administration will continue to support everything that involves our student athletes, to that end with my president (Dr. Emily Cutler), who has the greatest interest in our students at the forefront of all decisions. I would like to express my special gratitude.
“I would like to give special thanks to all the student athletes and colleagues who have achieved such success for the entire athletic club, all TAMUT coaches, and everyone involved in TAMUT athletics this year. It’s a great day to be an eagle! “
In the 2020-21 season, TAMUT won the RRAC All Sports Awards share for the first time. The trophies were sent to the best performing schools in all conference sports, resulting in a three-way draw. The Eagles have reached the RRAC Championship game this year with men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s tennis, baseball and softball. The softball team also brought back the tournament title for the first regular season in school history. Galvan also took leadership as an athletic director’s RRAC chair, and TAMUT hosted the RRAC Soccer Championship for the fourth consecutive year.
Galvan was elected three times as the RRAC Athletic Director of the Year while in the Southwest. He was also a three-time candidate for the Under Armor Athletic Director of the Year Award and a two-time candidate for the NAIA Coach of Character Award. Galvan also served as Mustangs baseball head coach during his tenure.
At both schools, Galvan emphasizes the leadership of servants with the requirements for the team to work in the community. TAMUT has supported the NAIA Champions of Character initiative, including food driving, fundraising support, youth camps in underprivileged areas, elementary school reading, Toys for Tots, and city-wide cleanup activities.
“Michael has been one of the mainstays of our conference since 2004,” says RRAC Commissioner Tony Stigriano. “He is one of the most influential managers in our history and has contributed significantly to the growth of RRAC. He has a strong foundation and a very competitive program at A & M-Texarkana. It’s no wonder we built it. “
Galvan is married to former Amber Shannon, who also works as an academic athletic coordinator in the TAMUT Athletics division. They have two boys, Ryan (19) and Alex (17).
