Texarkana, Texas (KTAL / KMSS) – The Texas Department of Transportation states that the crew will be better prepared this winter after the devastating winter storm in February. The Atlanta Department of Transportation is preparing for the next winter season.
The district has begun testing a fleet of more than 120 trucks and equipment used during winter weather events.
“This is the Atlanta district of nine counties. We have about 2,000 tonnes, which is £ 4 million of salt ready to make salt water,” said Buddy Williams, a TxDOT Atlanta district engineer. Salt water is a mixture of salt and water that is often used as the first line of defense. Prevents ice from adhering to the road surface.
In bad weather, TxDOT wants the driver to play his part.
“We want drivers to think about having an emergency road kit in case they get stuck during winter weather,” said JJ Singleton, TxDOT Safety Officer. He says the kit should include essentials such as blankets, water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and cell phone chargers. It is important for drivers to ask a trusted mechanic to inspect their car before going out on the road.
Kristy Whisenhunt, a traffic safety specialist at TxDOT, says it’s important to have patience on the road, as it can make a difference whether drivers return home safely.
“If you can, stay home first, but if you have to go out, do everything carefully, so slow down during the turn,” Wisenhunt said. She also encourages drivers who have to stop to brake gently and push slowly and steadily to test traction.
