Texas and Oklahoma have discussed with the Southeastern Conference about leaving the Big 12 and joining the Powerhouse League.
Those who knew the situation confirmed with the Associated Press a Houston Chronicle report that the two schools had discussed switching meetings with SEC staff, but the formal invitation had not been extended.
Those who spoke on condition of anonymity said Texas had begun discussions because the story was intended to be kept secret.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and the two schools all declined to comment. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bosby did not return a message.
Such a move would give the SEC16 football team.
It will be a devastating blow to the big 12 of the 10 members.
