Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA)-Many people were cooking on Thanksgiving holidays. Unfortunately, that can also mean an increase in home fires.

According to the Westview-Fairforest Fire Department, the most common fires they see are cooking fires. They said that the number of phones all depends on how safe people are.

“The woman had something cooked in the oven. It spilled and caused a fire in the oven. It was housed in the oven so there was no damage to the house other than in the oven. “Captain Robert Grizzle said.

Captain Robert Grizzle said calls tend to surge at this time of the year. On average, they receive 10 to 15 calls. He said he would hear the same phone over and over on a day like Thanksgiving.

“Fire alarms, some of them are from cooking. When a comment comes, it’s a fire oven. Cooking sounds the fire alarm,” says Grizzle.

Firefighter Ben Diffie said the damage caused by a kitchen fire depends on how long it takes for someone to notice it.

“How fast it spreads depends on how much attention they pay to cooking, because there is always a delay between making a call and getting there,” Diffie said.

Diffie said their shifts usually tend to be busy on Thanks for the Memories. But when they are not fighting a fire, they try to celebrate each other’s holidays.

“This is a family to us, so we get together to cook meals. We try to do as much as we can when it’s off,” Diffie said.

Diffie said they had work to do, whether it was a holiday or not, and ultimately hoped that Thanksgiving would be a safer holiday for everyone.

Diffie shares several ways to make it more secure. It’s about thawing turkeys, cleaning the oven, and paying attention to the contents of the stove.
